Uzani Rajbari – Gopalganj

Uzani Rajbari, located in the village of Uzani in the Muksudpur Upazila of Gopalganj, is a historic zamindar estate with a rich colonial past. During the time of Queen Victoria, two zamindar families from Jessore, Raj Govinda and Sur Narayan, settled here and began their zamindari with the land grant of the Telihati Pargana. As a result, they built an intricately designed mansion known as Uzani Rajbari, along with a brick-built meeting hall, a paved ghat, a tomb, and a temple. These buildings are remarkable examples of the architectural style of the time.

Sur Narayan’s grandson, Samrendra Chandra Roy, who remained at the estate even after the abolition of zamindari and the partition of India, shares the fascinating history of the estate with visitors. He recalls how, after the zamindars left for India, their legacy remained in the form of buildings and structures.

However, many of the buildings are now in ruins. The terracotta-style monastery built by the zamindars has a collapsed roof, and the temple has been looted and damaged over time. The Kali temple, adjacent to the zamindar’s residence, also stands in disrepair, and the stone statue of Kali that once adorned it has long since disappeared. The large pond near the estate has not been maintained for years and is now in poor condition. Other relics of the zamindari era can be found in nearby villages like Mahatali, where another ancient temple and a large pond still exist, though they too are falling into disrepair.

Samrendra Chandra Roy fondly recalls the vast zamindari that spanned almost 50,000 hectares, including areas like Chandar Bil, and notes that remnants of the zamindari still exist in the form of scattered buildings and monuments. Similarly, in the nearby Rajair Upazila, around 15 km east of Uzani, one can find a similar zamindar house, terracotta temples, and paved ghats, though these too are facing the threat of destruction.
