The name “Zamindar Bari” evokes a sense of aristocracy and grandeur. Once upon a time, many zamindars (landlords) lived in Bangladesh, and although they no longer hold the power of their estates, the mansions they built still stand as witnesses to history year after year. One such zamindar house in Tangail district is Pakutia Zamindar Bari, located in the Nagarpur Upazila, near the ancient Louhajong River.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Ramkrishna Saha Mondol acquired the zamindari in Pakutia through purchase from the English. He had two sons, Vrindaban and Radha Govinda. Radha Govinda was childless, while Vrindaban Chandra had three sons: Brajendra Mohan, Upendra Mohan, and Yogendra Mohan. The younger son, Upendra, was adopted by his uncle Radha Govinda. As a result, Upendra Mohan inherited a portion of his uncle’s zamindari estate.
On April 15, 1915, three palaces or mansions, built in the same design, were inaugurated on a land covering about 15 acres, named after the three brothers. Pakutia Zamindar Bari was known as the “Three Mahala” or “Three Side”. Each mahal (palace) has its own beauty, with exquisite carvings of vines and flowers that are truly captivating. In the center of each zamindar house is a beautiful sculpture of two women adorned with vines and flowers as a crown, along with a peacock greeting guests. Additionally, on the railing top or cornice of the second floor, there are small statues of women standing in various poses every five feet. These three structures are exemplary in artistic harmony.
The architecture of these palaces blends Western artistic influences with local aesthetics, creating a unique masterpiece. In front of each of the three houses, there is a small temple. The artistic carvings on the main prayer hall of the largest palace continue to mesmerize tourists even after a century. In front of the zamindar house, there is a vast field with a two-story dance hall in the middle. Each zamindar house also has its own bathing pool. To the west, near the house, is a large pond named Upendra Sarobar, with eight ghats (steps).
