Nagarpur Zamindar Bari – Tangail

A Zamindar Bari (landlord’s house) brings to mind grand buildings with exquisite craftsmanship. These mansions, with beauty etched in every corner of the walls, stand as witnesses to history and heritage. Among the Zamindar Houses in Tangail, one that stands out is the Pakutia Zamindar Bari in Nagarpur Upazila (Nagarpur), which is known for its unique architecture and nature’s picturesque surroundings that captivate the attention of tourists.

The zamindars, who were the wealthy elites, are well-known for their lavish lifestyles. A significant portion of the revenue collected from the peasants was spent by the zamindars on their pleasure and luxury. In the Pakutia area of Nagarpur Upazila, the zamindars built these magnificent residences with substantial investment and architectural skill. These palatial homes, now remnants of a bygone zamindari class, still stand amidst the ruins.

In the 19th century, using building materials brought from London and Kolkata, several two-story mansions were constructed. Three buildings from the Pakutia Zamindar Bari still stand to this day, untouched by time.

If you’re traveling from Dhaka, it’s easier to reach Pakutia Zamindar Bari by passing through Saturia, Manikganj, rather than Tangail. This Zamindar Bari is located on the border of Saturia Upazila and Nagarpur in Tangail. In front of the mansion, there is a vast field, and nearby, several two-story buildings, adorned with intricate carvings, stand in awe-inspiring beauty.

The first building in the Zamindar Bari has large sculptures of two women placed on top. Next to it, there are several smaller sculptures. However, many of these sculptures have been broken over time. The inscription on the mansion reads: “1915 Shri Babu Bhupendra Mohan Roy, 1322 Bengali Year, 2nd Baishakh, 15th April.” The mansion is now used as the administrative building and classrooms of Pakutia B.C.R.G. Degree College.

In front of this building, there is a two-story wooden and tin stage on the field. It is said that the Zamindars used to bring famous dancers to perform here. The zamindars would sit on the second floor to watch the dances.

To the right of the first building lies the second two-story building of the Zamindar Bari. Small and large figures, including fairies, are placed on the roof of the first and second floors of this building. An inscription inside the building reads: “1915, Shri Shri Vishnu Das Kabindra Thakur, Shri Shri Chobon Bharosa. Below, it says, Shri Babu Yogendra Mohan Mondal, 1322 Bengali Year, 2nd Baishakh, 15th April.” Currently, this building is used as the Pakutia Sub-Health Center.

Next to it is another two-story building, adorned with various fairy and woman figures on the roof. This building is currently occupied by local residents.

Around the Zamindar Bari, there are several large wells, which were used for cooking and various other tasks in the house.

Over time, the powerful zamindars of Pakutia left for India, taking their valuable belongings and leaving behind the massive mansions. Since then, some influential local people have attempted to seize the property. As the estate remained unguarded for a long period, many valuable items were stolen. Today, the buildings are in the possession of various individuals. Visiting Pakutia Zamindar Bari for a brief moment can transport you to the past.

Local people claim that if the Department of Archaeology acquires Pakutia Zamindar Bari and preserves and restores it as a heritage site, this magnificent estate will be saved from destruction.
