Lotus Water Bodies – Gopalganj

Gopalganj is a district full of bills (water bodies). There are numerous bills throughout the district, which are mainly single-crop lands. In these areas, farmers usually cultivate rice during the Boro season. After that, the land fills with rainwater, and every year, the red water lilies (Lal Shapla) naturally bloom in these bills.

At least 25 bills in the Kotali Para and Tungipara upazilas of Gopalganj are filled with red water lilies.

As far as the eye can see, the entire bill is covered with red water lilies. From a distance, it looks like the entire bill is covered with a red carpet. People from far and wide visit to enjoy this natural beauty. The lush green fields around, with the red water lilies in the center, create a scene reminiscent of another Bangladesh.

However, many years ago, these bills would also grow white and green lilies, but since the 1988 flood, the red water lilies started to bloom. The entire area turns red, creating a unique and breathtaking sight that fills the hearts of visitors.

These lilies not only enhance the beauty of the bills but also serve as a source of income for the poor, as during the rainy season, when there is little work, they sell these lilies in the market.
