Belai Beel (also spelled as Belai Bil), located near Dhaka in Gazipur, is a picturesque spot surrounded by lotus flowers. The river’s blue sky above, the colorful patterns on the water, and the gentle breeze create an enchanting atmosphere. It is a perfect blend of the river and the beel (bil), with the stillness of the surroundings, the gentle ripples on the water, and the sound of cicadas, making Belai Beel an ideal place to visit for a day trip.
Though the beel (bil) doesn’t have water all year round, it comes alive with doubled beauty during the monsoon season. The entire area is covered with blooming lotus flowers, and the red and white lotuses seem to have opened their own kingdom here. At the Kanaiya Bazar ghat, you can hire a dinghy or engine-powered boat for a whole day to explore the lotus kingdom of Belai Beel (Bil).
History and Transformation of Belai Beel (Bil):
Currently, the beel (bil) spans an area of eight square miles, though it was once even larger, encompassing the villages of Bauriya, Brahmangao, Boktarpur, and Bamchini. Belai Beel (Bil) was originally a fast-flowing body of water, similar to the Chela River. It is said that Bhawal’s landowner, Ghateswar Ghosh, dug 80 canals, draining the water from the Chela River, which transformed it into a large beel (bil).
During the monsoon, fishermen dig dykes around the beel (bil) to fish. In the dry season, the beel (bil) turns into fertile land where Boro rice is cultivated.
Scenic Views and Activities at Belai Beel (Bil):
The view of the beel (bil) in the evening is breathtaking. Standing on the new bridge in Kanaiya Bazar, you can experience the mesmerizing scenery, which will leave you in a state of contemplation for a moment. You can also visit Bamchini Mouza, an island village within the beel (bil).
One interesting fact about this village is that it has only one house in one of its mouzas, a phenomenon that is unique to Bangladesh. After enjoying the scenic beauty, you can visit Kanaiya Bazar for tea and biscuits.
Note that there are no other food arrangements in Kanaiya Bazar, so if you plan to spend an extended period visiting the beel (bil), it’s recommended to bring your own food.
