Jangalbari Fort – Kishoreganj

Jangalbari Fort is located in the Jangalbari village under the Karimganj Upazila of Kishoreganj District. The fort is currently in a state of ruin. According to local legend, after being defeated by Man Singh in the Battle of Egara Sindhur, Isa Khan took control of the fort from Lakhan Singh Hajra.

It is likely that neither Lakhan Hajra nor Isa Khan was the original builder of the fort. Numerous broken bricks and pottery fragments have been found outside the fort, particularly in the southern, western, and north-western parts of the area. These findings suggest that the site may have been a prosperous settlement before the arrival of Muslims. However, within the fort, several structures belong to Isa Khan.

Fort Structure and History:

Evidence surrounding the fort indicates that it had a circular shape. Deep moats were dug to the south, west, and north sides, and it was connected to the Narasunda River to the east. The land of the fort still seems to resemble an island. Other than some scattered broken bricks, pottery fragments, and a few low mounds, there is little else left of the fort.

Jangalbari, located on the banks of the Narasunda River in Karimganj, was Isa Khan’s second capital and known for its natural beauty.

Isa Khan’s Influence and Remains:

Outside the fort, numerous brick pieces and pottery shards indicate that the fort was built before the arrival of the Muslims. However, inside the fort, there are several buildings that were constructed by Isa Khan. The remains of his residence are still visible, and although the roof has collapsed, much of the durbar hall still stands. Adjacent to the durbar hall, there are still traces of a guest house with 10-12 rooms. Some parts of the inner chambers have been renovated, and Isa Khan’s descendants still live there.

The site of the fort still appears as an island, surrounded by water so deep that even in the dry season, it can only be crossed by boat. Over time, the memories of Jangalbari Fort are slowly fading away.

Isa Khan Memorial Museum:

The local administration has renovated one of the durbar halls of Isa Khan’s Jangalbari Fort and established the “Isa Khan Memorial Museum” there. However, other than a few photographs and a family tree of Isa Khan, there is not much memorabilia related to him. Some of his relics can also be found at the Kishoreganj Public Library.
