Kishoreganj, a region rich in Muslim heritage, is surrounded by a wealth of history. It boasts numerous famous historical and modern architectural sites. One such landmark is the historic Pagla Masjid (Pagla Mosque), which is over 250 years old.
Located on the banks of the Narsunda River in the western part of the city, this three-story mosque is a prominent sight. Its five-story tall minaret stands out, catching the eye from far away. The architecture of Pagla Masjid is quite beautiful, with a modern design that blends historical elements, making it a well-known landmark in the region.
History of Pagla Masjid:
According to local legend, a spiritual man, who was known to wear the attire of a madman, floated across the turbulent Narsunda River on a mat, eventually resting near the present mosque’s location. Over time, many devotees gathered around him. After his death, a mosque was built next to his tomb, and as time passed, the mosque came to be known as “Pagla Masjid.”
This mosque is considered a highly sacred place, not only by Muslims but also by people of all religions from the greater Mymensingh area and its surroundings. There is a strong belief that anyone who donates sincerely at this mosque will have their wishes fulfilled.
Due to this widespread belief, many people offer generous donations at Pagla Masjid.
The mosque has expanded significantly over time. Initially, it was built on a 10 percent portion of the Habatanagar Dewanbari Waqf land. Now, it occupies 3 acres and 88 percent of land. In 2002, a Hafizia Madrasa was established next to the mosque to manage its expenses.
Recognized as one of the country’s most financially self-sustaining religious institutions, the mosque was recently renamed the “Pagla Masjid Islamic Complex.” The mosque’s income has been used to construct a large complex building. Additionally, funds from the mosque are allocated for various service-oriented projects.
