Katka, Kachikhali, Neelkal, Dublar Char, Sheikh’s Tek Mandir, Mandarbaria Beach, Herbaria, Dobeki, Kalirchar, Mrigamarim Supati, etc., and Karamjal are just a few of the interesting places to visit in the Sundarbans. Karamjal is the most popular tourist destination among them. On the banks of the Pasur River, a 30-hectare tourist attraction has been built as a replica of the Sundarbans.
If you only have a day to see the Sundarbans, you should go to Karamjal Parjoton Kendro.
Karamjal is the starting point for most visitors to the Sundarbans due to the short distance (45 minutes) and low cost (launch/trawler) of travel between Mangla and Karamjal.
The Sundarbans can be understood thanks to a large-scale map displayed at the beginning of the visitor centre. The map is left behind as you follow the crooked wooden walkway south into the forest. The path is known as the Monkey Trail.
As soon as you set foot on the trail, you’ll understand why it was given this name. The trail is frequented by rhesus monkeys, which can be found in the Sundarbans.
Both sides of the road were lined with thick trees. This pine-filled forest has a lot of trees. Once the wooden boardwalk has extended for a fair distance, a fork will split off to the left and terminate at the Pasur riverbank. A bench and a tent can be found at the river’s end.
About 500 metres further south, at the edge of a narrow canal, the main route comes to a halt. At the beginning of the trail, you’ll find yet another shed. After passing the crocodile breeding grounds, the wooden path continues westward. In the middle of this path, there is a lookout tower. The view from the peak provides a good overview of Karamjal and its environs.
At the far end of the boardwalk is a crocodile breeding facility. The breeding grounds for crocodiles and deer are located in the nearby west. There are a lot of little kids up front. The saltwater crocodiles range in age from young adults to mature adults.
Romeo, Juliet, and Pilpil are all in the southern side’s large walled pond. In 2002, three saltwater crocodiles were hauled to Karmjal in the Sundarbans after being caught in fishing nets. Age 23 for Romeo and Juliet In 2005, the couple finally conceived.
They have been the driving force behind the first ever fabricated crocodile population in Bangladesh. Juliet is a tad more petite than Romeo. This crocodile can live up to a hundred years in the wild.
So far, Juliet has produced 482 eggs. The Wildlife Breeding and Conservation Centre staff used that nesting box to successfully hatch 284 baby animals. At the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Conservation Centre, there is also a woman named Pilpil. So far, 33 of the 44 eggs she’s laid have successfully hatched.
Next to it is an area with zoo-like cages lining the perimeter. Inside, Chitra saw a deer. To the west of the main enclosure is a smaller cage. A few rhesus monkeys are housed here.
The most fascinating thing for visitors is the afternoon arrival of herds of wild Chitral deer to the Karamjal area in search of handouts. Travellers interested in learning more about the Sundarbans’ mangrove ecosystem and its many unique plant and animal species need look no further than Karamjal.
Existing trees here are labelled for easy identification with nameplates.
