Anand Vihara is one of the richest and most ancient archeological sites in Bangladesh. Ananda Bihar The largest of the Buddhist monasteries discovered at Mainamati is square in shape, measuring 198 meters in each direction. Here also the rooms of the monks can be seen on the four arms of the square, as like Shalban Bihar.
There is a huge cruciform temple in the middle of the open courtyard of Bihar. These rooms are enclosed around this temple. It’s only picturesque entrance is in the northern center of Bihar. The exterior of the entrance is spacious and massive and the outer side is extended.
Its exterior wall is relatively beautiful to look at with offset and molded designs. The walls of the inner balcony are also decorated with molded ornaments and designed bricks. A few rooms in the north row and the southern part of the central temple have been excavated.
From these it is understood that these rooms were once used as part of temples. A copperplate, 63 silver coins, a large number of bronze statues and terracotta plaques have been discovered in this monastery. A furnace for burning pottery was found outside the monastery.
It is believed that the Anandabihara complex with the largest pond in the area was built by Sri Anandadev, the third ruler of the first Deva dynasty, at some point in the late 7th or early 8th century.
