The Shrine of Baba Adam Kashmiri – Tangail

Ali Shahan Shah Baba Adam Kashmiri (R.A) was a revered Sufi saint and preacher of Islam who arrived in Bangladesh during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah. During this period, he served as a zamindar of Atiya. In honor of Baba Adam Kashmiri, the zamindar of Kartyar, Said Khan Panni, constructed the Atiya Mosque. Baba Kashmiri was born in the fifteenth century and passed away in 1613.

In 1598, in a gesture of public welfare, Ali Shahan Shah Baba Adam Kashmiri was granted the Atiya pargana. The term “Atiya” itself signifies a gift or donation. According to local lore, Baba Kashmiri lived for a remarkable 150 years. While he did accept some financial assistance from the royal treasury, he spent most of his wealth on public welfare activities, including building schools (maktabs and madrasas) and improving infrastructure like roads. During his time, high-quality paper was also produced in Atiya.

Upon his death in 1613, Baba Kashmiri was laid to rest in Atiya, where his shrine still stands today. Before his passing, he entrusted his beloved devotee Said Khan with the governance of the Atiya pargana. Based on his recommendation, Subedar Islam Khan and Mughal Emperor Jahangir appointed Said Khan as the ruler of the Atiya region and Baba Kashmiri’s nephew Shahjaman as the ruler of Kagmari. Said Khan later became the founder of the Kartyar zamindari.

The exact time when Baba Adam Kashmiri arrived in this region remains unclear, though it is widely believed that he came here from Kashmir to spread the teachings of Islam. Some suggest that he arrived in 1598, as he was granted large lands in the Atiya region by Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah, and by the regional governor, Solaiman Karrani, to support his religious endeavors.

In Atiya, the shrine of Baba Kashmiri stands as a tribute to his legacy. Nearby, the famous Atiya Mosque was built to honor him.
