The institution was founded in 1940 by Rondon Prasad Saha, a well-known zamindar and philanthropist from Tangail, with the aim of empowering women. He named the institution after his maternal grandmother, Bharatashwari Devi. Bharateswari Homes is widely known across the country for its discipline and adherence to rules. The institution provides residential facilities for female students and offers education up to the higher secondary level. The students follow a strict daily routine, waking up at 5 AM for morning drills and going to bed at 10 PM. Most of the work at the institution is done by the students themselves, with each class divided into groups of 30 for various tasks. Currently, there are nearly 1,000 students and 68 teachers, including 8 men.

The institution was founded by philanthropist Rondon Prasad Saha in the name of his great-grandmother Bharatashwari Devi, with the aim of providing women the right to shape their own destiny. The goal of the institution is to develop girls into virtuous, honest, and ideal citizens, instilling a sense of responsibility and ethics in them. The institution is committed to creating a society with people who possess mutual tolerance and a spirit of sacrifice.
Rondon Prasad Saha believed that education is the cornerstone of a nation’s development. He realized that in a society where women are not at the forefront and are deprived of education, such a society can never prosper. He strongly advocated for women’s right to live independently and with equal rights as men. Apart from education, Bharateswari Homes emphasizes cultural activities and physical fitness.
The main objective was to help the students develop in multiple ways, adapt to every level of society, and navigate through time and environment. Before every meal, the students of this institution offer a prayer: “O merciful Lord, we are about to accept food by your infinite grace, for which we remain eternally indebted to you. May no one remain hungry, with your blessing.”
Bharateswari Homes is the first residential educational institution for girls in Bangladesh. Though established in 1945, the higher secondary level was introduced in 1962. The higher secondary section was closed in 1973, but it was reintroduced in 1983. In addition to regular studies, the students participate in various cultural activities every week. The institution offers computer education, an English Language Club, a Science Club, a Debate Club, and a branch of the World Literature Center for those aspiring to become enlightened individuals. In 1997, Bharateswari Homes established the largest youth organization for children, adolescents, and young people in the country—Girls in Scouting. As of 2010, there are 815 students at Bharateswari Homes, with 26 teachers and staff members working there.
