Loading...Mahisarer Digambari Dighi, located in the Mahishar area of Shariatpur’s Bhadrangonj Upazila, is a 600-year-old historic site and one of the most revered pilgrimage and recreational spots for Hindus in Bangladesh. The site is home to the Digambari Sannyasi’s house and a large, ancient pond (Dighi), which has become a center of spiritual and cultural activities for the local Hindu community.
The pond was excavated by Raja Chand Ray, a Zamindar of the Vikrampur region during the Mughal era, at the request of the Digambari Sannyasi. The pond was created on a 10-acre plot of land and is part of a larger area that includes the ancestral home of Digambari, a fairground, the Monsha Temple, Kali Temple, and other structures spread over 23 acres and 85 percent of land. The surrounding areas of the pond, along with its rich historical heritage, make it a potential tourist destination for Shariatpur and the country as a whole.
Local legends say that every Saturday and Tuesday, Hindu devotees gather for prayers at the site. Additionally, on Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year), a large fair and religious celebration takes place, attracting thousands of devotees and visitors, both from within Bangladesh and abroad. During the winter, the area also hosts thousands of migratory birds, adding to the scenic beauty of the location. It is believed that taking a bath in the pond’s water cleanses one of all sins and ailments, which draws numerous pilgrims with vows and hopes for healing.
In 1982, the Dighi was excavated once again with the help of more than 50 irrigation pumps. During this excavation, several rare statues and archaeological artifacts were discovered, including a 42 kg stone sculpture. To preserve this historical site, both governmental and non-governmental efforts are needed. Former Water Resources Minister and Member of Parliament for Shariatpur-3, Abdur Razzak, has suggested that the government take over the site through the tourism corporation for restoration and maintenance. This would position Mahisar as an ideal spot for archaeological research and tourism.
