Among the historic structures of the country, the Teota Zamindar Bari in Manikganj holds a significant place in history. The historic remnants of this mansion now stand as silent witnesses to time. Located on the banks of the Jamuna River in the Shivaloy upazila, the green and serene village of Teota has secured its place in history due to the establishment of the Navaratna Temple by the Zamindar Shyamshankar Roy. The pure white Navaratna Temple used to be visible from afar. In the past, the courtyard of the Zamindar’s house would come alive with colorful celebrations during the Dol Pooja and Durga Puja festivals. The village of Teota in Shivaloy upazila of Manikganj has gained further recognition due to the association of our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and his wife Pramila. Teota village’s own daughter, Pramila, was married to Nazrul Islam.
The Zamindar house is near the home of Basantkumar Sen and Giribala Sen, whose daughter Ashalata Sen, or Pramila, became Nazrul’s wife. Her nickname was Duli. The restless and free-spirited Nazrul visited this village several times, but there remains much debate about why he came here.
However, there is a popular story that in 1922, Nazrul came to Teota with Pramila. Most people agree on this. In that year, in September, Nazrul’s poem “Anandamoyir Agomone” was published in the weekly Dhumketu, and the British government issued a warrant for his arrest. Nazrul went into hiding in Teota village with Pramila.
Even though he came here to hide, the energetic Nazrul did not sit idly. He roamed the village of Teota, surrounded by lush greenery and the songs of birds, by the river’s side. He entertained the villagers with his songs, poetry, and hearty laughter. At night, he would sometimes sit by the paved ghat of the Zamindar’s pond, playing the flute with a melancholic tune, captivating the night-watchers of the village.
