Shaheed Barkat Museum – Dhaka

The Shaheed Barkat Museum was officially inaugurated on March 25, 2012, showcasing photographs of various processions, meetings, and other events from the turbulent days of the Language Movement, along with images of the language martyrs and letters written to loved ones.

This two-story museum also displays a variety of other artifacts. The building premises, covered with green grass, feature a statue of Abul Barkat. This museum is dedicated to Abul Barkat, one of the language martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement. The official name of the museum is the Language Martyr Abul Barkat Memorial Museum and Collection.

The museum houses Abul Barkat’s personal belongings, such as his glassware, clock, handwritten letters, a documentary on the Language Movement, his posthumous Ekushey Padak award, and photographs of him.

On the ground floor of the building, his personal items and photographs are displayed. The upper floor has a library, which contains over five hundred books on the Language Movement and the Liberation War. The collection of books is still ongoing.

The museum offers parking space for 10 to 12 cars and provides a guide service for visitors. Special exhibitions and competitions are also held on certain days at the museum.

Visiting Hours:

The museum is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. It is open for visitors from Sunday to Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

How to Reach:

The museum is located to the west of the Salimullah Muslim Hall at Dhaka University and to the north of Palashi Mor. You can reach it from Shahbagh, Gulistan, or Newmarket by rickshaw. The rickshaw fare from Shahbagh is around 30-40 Taka.
