Sagardighi – Tangail

Sagardighi is a place located about 30 km east of Ghatail Upazila, Tangail District, Bangladesh. It is home to a famous pond spread across 12.80 acres of land. The pond was excavated by the local Sagor Raja, a member of the Pal dynasty.

On the western shore of the pond, the remnants of a stone-paved ghat can still be seen, which is believed to be the residence of Sagor Raja. The area was previously known as Lohani. Just slightly south of Sagardighi, there is an even larger pond known as Boinnodighi, which covers an area of 25 acres. This pond was excavated by Sagor Raja’s son, Banaraj Pal.

In the Sagardighi block, there is a vast water body named Sagardighi. The pond stretches about a mile from east to west. It is believed to have been excavated during the reign of Mahipal in the 8th century. According to local legends, King Mahipal had this pond excavated as an atonement for the sin of Brahmhata (the killing of a Brahmin).

The story goes that King Mahipal, having been exiled from northern Bengal, traveled to the northern region of Rarh with his family, priest, and loyal followers to establish a new capital in Chandanbati. On the way, his queen’s visit to see a Brahmin child caused the child to fall from a tree and die. The king was deeply saddened and sought advice from his family priest to atone for the sin of Brahmhata. The priest suggested that the beauty of the queen had caused the sin. Therefore, the queen must walk from the place where the child died to the new capital, and a pond must be excavated along the route she walked. After excavating the pond, water did not fill the pond. Later, a pious local potter named Sagar, under divine guidance, dug the pond with a spade, and the water began to rise. However, for this, he had to sacrifice his life in the pond. This is why the pond came to be known as Sagardighi, or the “Potter’s Pond of Sagar.” The area was subsequently named Sagardighi after the pond.
