Maya Dwip, beginning with the word “Maya” meaning illusion or charm, is a beautiful island-like sandbar that has emerged in the middle of the Meghna River. This scenic destination is located in the Bardi Union of Sonargaon Upazila under Narayanganj District.
The original name of Maya Dwip is Nunertek. Maya Dwip is separated from the main land of Sonargaon by the Meghna River. The distance by river from Sonargaon is about four to five kilometers.
Around 35–36 years ago, another triangular-shaped sandbar appeared near Nunertek. This landmass is divided into three parts known as Gucchogram, Sabujbag, and Raghunar Char. The large open area in front of Gucchogram is what people call Maya Dwip today.
The Natural Beauty of Maya Dwip
Maya Dwip is a small but stunning island surrounded by endless greenery. It looks like a rural green plain with beautiful sandy banks. Each season brings a completely different look to this island.
During the monsoon, the Meghna River appears like the sea, and the vast water creates an enchanting atmosphere perfect for boat rides. In autumn, the white Kash flower fields create a dreamy landscape. In winter, the warm sunshine over the golden sandy riverbank offers a peaceful retreat. Even in summer, the dry sands reveal an entirely different charm.
On a moonlit night, the brightness of the full moon across the open fields and water can take you into a world of tranquility. Although the island remains underwater during the monsoon, it becomes fully visible and accessible during the dry season.
The blue water of the Meghna’s branch river beside Maya Dwip is appealing enough to make anyone want to jump in. Swimming is allowed and widely enjoyed by visitors. Standing on the green island with arms wide open, you’ll feel like flying into the open sky. The fresh river breeze and the lush beauty all around will refresh your body and mind.
The constant breeze makes you feel lighter and relaxed, free from all stress. Spend a holiday here with family to enjoy the natural charm and simplicity of Maya Dwip.
