Our Bengali language was achieved through countless lives lost and sacrifices made. Salim, Rafiq, Jabbar, Barkat, Shafiur, and many others became martyrs when they were shot by the police during the protests on the streets. To honor their memory, the Language Movement Museum was established in 2010 at the Bangla Academy.
The museum occupies four rooms on the second floor of the Bardhaman House at the Bangla Academy. These rooms are filled with various memorabilia and items from the Language Movement. Among the exhibits are the matriculation certificate of Language Martyr Rafiq, the coat worn by Language Martyr Shafiur Rahman, a memorial letter to Mohammad Ali Jinnah from the State Language Action Committee, a page from the first book printed in Bengali, and the beloved cotton bag of Language Martyr Shafiur Rahman.
The museum also displays various books related to the history of the Language Movement, covers of magazines published during that time, and various photographs related to the movement.
Visiting Hours:
The museum is open every day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on holidays. During Language Martyrs’ Month, the museum remains open from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. There is no fee for entry to the museum.
How to Reach:
You can easily reach the Language Movement Museum by rickshaw from Shahbagh, with a fare of 15-20 Taka. Alternatively, you can take a walk and enjoy a conversation on your way to the museum at the Bangla Academy.
