Jahangirnagar University – Dhaka

Jahangirnagar University is a well-known university located in Savar, near Dhaka. Nestled in nature, the campus is home to a wide variety of biodiversity. However, the highlight of the university is its Butterfly Garden, which has attracted attention from all over.

The butterfly garden spans 300 acres and includes butterfly-friendly forests, flower gardens, and species houses. It is home to 110 species of butterflies, 61 of which are new to Bangladesh.

The garden features a natural breeding center for butterflies, and in the Department of Zoology, Monwar Hossain has created an artificial breeding center. The butterflies born at this center are released into the garden. To date, more than a hundred butterflies from two species have been bred in this center.

But it’s not just butterflies that make this campus special. In winter, the campus becomes a haven for migratory birds. The entire Jahangirnagar University campus comes alive with the sounds of birds. The red water lilies of the lake, along with the water activities of the migratory birds, create a beautiful landscape of natural beauty.

As winter sets in, thousands of migratory birds arrive at the lakes adorned with red lilies. The lakes on the campus become a popular spot to witness these birds, providing immense joy for visitors. People of all ages come to enjoy the peaceful sight of these birds.

Although Jahangirnagar University has around 16-17 lakes, three lakes—those in front of the administrative building, adjacent to Jahannara Imam and Preetilata Halls, and near Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall—are particularly frequented by migratory birds. These lakes have been declared sanctuaries by the university administration.

According to the university’s Natural Observation Center, among the 244 species of migratory birds, 12-13 species typically visit the campus each year. The majority of these birds are waterfowl, such as ducks, who prefer aquatic habitats. Some notable species include the Sarali, Khanjana, Patarihan, Patitara, Nonajotsa, Goyar, Dhupani, Lal Muri, Bamunia, Sindhu Eagle, Barighora, Hood Hood, and others.

To ensure the safety of the migratory birds, the university administration and the Department of Zoology have taken several steps. The lakes are cleaned regularly, and this year, wire fencing has been installed around the lakes to protect the birds. Additionally, security personnel are stationed to monitor and control the movement of visitors, and banners and signs with instructions have been placed around the lakes to guide visitors and protect the birds.

Every year, thousands of migratory birds from colder regions like Siberia, Mongolia, Nepal, Xinjiang, and India arrive in Bangladesh. These birds generally arrive at the end of October or the beginning of November and return to their native lands in late March.
