Hatirjheel – Dhaka

When the hectic life of the bustling city becomes unbearable and you seek peace or some entertainment, you can head to Hatirjheel, Dhaka’s modern recreational center, on a holiday or in the afternoon. Hatirjheel is a place anyone can visit, whether day or night.

The project was developed by the Bangladesh Army’s Special Works Organization (SWO) after five years of work aimed at land reclamation, rainwater conservation, flood prevention, waste water drainage system improvement, alleviating traffic congestion, and enhancing the city’s beauty. Hatirjheel has now become a significant recreational location.

Boat Ride at Hatirjheel

Amid the mechanical chaos of Dhaka, Hatirjheel offers a completely different experience. On one side, you have lush greenery, while on the other side, there is the clear water of Hatirjheel. The water buses glide smoothly across the water, offering a pleasant journey while also reducing the travel time between Gulshan and Kawran Bazar, avoiding the traffic. Currently, five water buses operate, each with a capacity of 45 passengers. Tourists frequently visit along with regular commuters.

The water taxi service operates from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Each water taxi can carry up to 45 passengers. The journey from the FDC terminal to the Gulshan terminal takes around 20 minutes, while it takes 5 minutes less to reach the Rampura terminal. The fare from FDC to Rampura is 25 Taka, and from FDC to Gulshan is 30 Taka. Inside the water taxi, there is a mini canteen where passengers can purchase biscuits, cakes, soft drinks, and light snacks.

Hatirjheel Circular Bus Service

There is a circular bus service for the people living around Hatirjheel. These buses are different from regular buses in Dhaka because of the seating arrangement inside. Approximately 32-46 passengers are seated in a way that they all face each other, similar to the seating arrangement of metro trains in other countries. The bus service runs from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The buses start at the FDC in Kawran Bazar and pass through Rampura and Banshree before returning to the starting point.

Hatirjheel has a total of 8 bus stops. The fare from one stop to the next is 10 Taka. To travel from one end of Hatirjheel to the other, it costs just 20 Taka. If you want to travel the entire length of Hatirjheel, the cost is only 30 Taka.

Musical Water Fountain

Along with the fresh air under the open sky, a new addition to Hatirjheel is its colorful water fountain, synchronized with music. The fountains dance to the rhythm of the music, accompanied by dazzling light flashes. This is the largest musical dancing fountain in South Asia, and the water from the fountain can rise from 10 meters to 80 meters high. The fountain is sometimes turned on for 15 minutes at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM for visitors to enjoy the spectacular display.

How to Reach:

You can easily reach Hatirjheel from anywhere in Dhaka by bus or CNG auto. Since Hatirjheel spans a large area, you can start your visit from any part of the area that is most convenient for you.
