The Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ Monument) is a memorial built in honor of the language martyrs who lost their lives in the 1952 Language Movement. It is located in the heart of the capital city, Dhaka, within the premises of Dhaka Medical College. Every year on February 21st, thousands of people gather here to pay their respects to the martyrs of the language movement.
The first Shaheed Minar was constructed hastily and in a rather unplanned manner. To immortalize the memory of the language martyrs, a monument was built within the premises of the Medical College Hostel by the night of February 23. However, the government demolished it on February 26.
Finally, after Bengali was recognized as one of the state languages of Pakistan, work on the Central Shaheed Minar began in 1957. The construction was completed in 1963 under the supervision of a committee formed by the then Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr. Mahmud Hossain.
