Botanical Garden – Dhaka

Located in Mirpur, Dhaka, next to the Dhaka Zoo, the Botanical Garden (National Plant Garden) is the largest center for plant species conservation, research, and display in Bangladesh. Established in 1961, it spans approximately 208 acres and is one of the largest plant gardens in the country. Every year, nearly 1.5 million visitors come to spend time in nature or visit for leisure. Another garden in Dhaka, Baldha Garden, is administratively part of this garden.

This vast garden, with its shaded pathways and abundance of birds, is home to seven water bodies, including a lotus pond and a water lily pond, which do not need further introduction. The water lily pond blooms from April to September every year. In the past, migratory waterfowl would visit the large water bodies during the winter months, but they no longer come.

For visitors, there are many walking paths, both large and small, some paved with asphalt, others with bricks, and a few natural dirt trails. Walking through these paths, you will see a variety of trees from nature. It’s a pleasant walk alongside raised hills and lower water bodies.

The National Garden has a 1.5-acre seasonal flower garden. It cultivates nearly 52 varieties of foreign seasonal flowers, including salvia, morning glory, marigold, and dahlia. Surrounding the garden is a winding artificial lake. In 1980, a rose garden covering 3.5 acres was created, and it houses nearly 200 varieties of roses. In the middle of one of the rose gardens, there is a circular water body, home to Brazil’s Amazon Lily.

In 1980-81, a Deodar-Eucalyptus Garden was established in the park. The eucalyptus trees were brought from Australia. There are 16 varieties of eucalyptus and sky-flower trees here. The bamboo garden has around 22 species of bamboo. On the north side of the Gorse Garden, a medicinal plant garden has been created, featuring plants such as Kalmegh, Tulsi, Atmora, Shatomuli, Purnanava, Thanakuni, Ginger, Bottle Brush, Telakucha, Kumari Lata, Baska, and various other medicinal plants.

The garden spans nearly 5 acres and has a nursery, where saplings of flowers, fruits, vines, and shrubs are grown. The saplings are available for purchase at government-fixed prices.
