Located on the banks of the Turag River, Birulia is an ancient settlement and a small village famous for the beautiful house of Zamindar Rajanikant, along with almost 11 ancient structures. It is also home to several temples. If you’re looking for a place close to Dhaka for a quick trip, you might want to visit this charming village. The serene surroundings of Birulia, next to the Turag River, are sure to captivate your heart.
The majority of Birulia’s inhabitants are Hindus. While many people travel to different parts of the country to witness historical landmarks or archaeological sites, Birulia’s rich history, heritage, and the Zamindar house remain hidden from the public eye. Despite being somewhat overlooked, once you enter the village, you’ll find remnants of time in the form of decaying structures scattered around, including a temple.
At the far end of the village, right by the river, is the beautiful house of Zamindar Rajanikant Ghosh. His descendants still reside there.
According to local residents and the descendants of the Zamindar, Rajanikant Ghosh bought this house from Zamindar Nalini Mohan Saha for 8,960 Taka and 4 Anas. Although Rajanikant Ghosh owned several houses in Old Dhaka and Narayanganj, almost all of them are now in the possession of others. During the riots of 1964, all of Rajanikant’s valuable belongings were looted, leaving Birulia Zamindar Bari as the only property left. Other old houses in Birulia were later bought by a businessman, but now they, too, have been taken over by others.
The houses include the Sadar Ghar (Main House), Bisramsala (Rest House), Bijar Ghar (Courtroom), Peyadaghar (Servant Quarters), and Ghorashala (Stable), among others. However, these are now used for different purposes.
Birulia’s Mirchini Murali (a type of local product) is highly valued across the country. These products can be found at various fairs across the country, alongside products from Sonargaon. Birulia is also famous for its history and heritage, with the beautiful house of Zamindar Rajanikant located at the very end of the village, right by the river.
