Among the historical landmarks of Kalkini Upazila, Senapoti’s Dighi holds a significant place. On December 24, 1665,
during the Mughal era, Islam Khan, the trusted commander of Buzurg Umed Khan—the eldest son of Subedar Shaista Khan—
excavated this large reservoir. For nearly three and a half centuries, it has stood as a silent witness to time.
Today, the dighi remains neglected, with no initiatives taken for its preservation. Its beauty is slowly fading, and
if left unattended, it may eventually disappear, surviving only in the pages of history. Neither the government nor
private organizations have taken steps to restore this heritage site, although the area holds great potential to be
developed into a tourist attraction that could generate revenue for the region.
Senapoti’s Dighi (Senapotir Dighi) is located between Amratola and Khatiyal villages in Baligram Union under Dasar
Police Station of Kalkini Upazila, Madaripur. The reservoir, covering approximately 15 acres of land, has differing
historical accounts regarding its excavation.
According to local stories, during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Subedar Shaista Khan led an operation to
drive out the Magh pirates. His eldest son, Buzurg Umed Khan, conducted military campaigns across 288 rivers. After
driving the pirates away from the Chattogram region, part of their army moved toward Bakerganj (modern-day Barishal)
and continued to push the Magh forces back. While traveling toward Dhaka, the army stayed for several days between
Amratola and Khatiyal areas of present-day Kalkini. During this time, to solve the shortage of drinking water, the
commander Islam Khan and his troops dug this large reservoir, which later became known as “Senapoti’s Dighi.”
