Flanked by two large ponds on either side, complete with stone-built ghats (bathing steps), the estate retains a haunting beauty. Even in decay, the charm of this historic zamindar house is undeniable.
Constructed during the British colonial period, the exact year of the building’s origin remains uncertain. Likewise, no verifiable records exist identifying the original builder. What is known, however, is the legacy of the zamindar family that ruled from this estate—one often marked by authoritarian rule and cruelty. When tenants failed to pay their taxes, they were subjected to harsh punishments.
The Satgram Zamindar Bari, also referred to as Babuder Bari by locals, was not just a residence. It served as the administrative heart of the zamindari system in the region. From here, the landlords managed land distribution, levied taxes, and enforced their authority over local peasants. While the estate represents power and exploitation, it also stands as a symbol of architectural grandeur and the cultural footprint of Bengal’s feudal past.
Surrounding the main house are lush gardens, serene ponds, and the remnants of what once were elegant courtyards. Even in ruins, these spaces evoke a sense of timelessness and echo the complex history of aristocracy in Bangladesh.
How to Get There
Visiting Satgram Zamindar Bari in Brahmanbaria is quite straightforward. From Dhaka, take the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway and get off at Purinda Bus Stand. From there, you can either take a rickshaw or simply walk to reach the Satgram Zamindar House.
