The Rose Garden (Rose Garden) is a historic mansion located in the Tikatul area of Old Dhaka. In the early 1930s, Zamindar Hushikesh Das constructed this mansion on seven acres of land and created a beautiful environment with flower gardens and other plants surrounding the house.
Although the building is named Rose Garden, there are very few roses to be seen there today. However, seasonal flowers are abundant. The large white mansion stands tall, with the beautiful Ghatal pond still present on the right side. The marble statues in the garden are so shiny that they can only be fully appreciated when seen in person.
There is an artificial fountain in the middle of the garden, though it no longer functions as it once did. The mansion has 13 rooms, including an upper floor dance hall, a lower-floor sitting room, and white marble statues. The back building houses the servants’ quarters. The house adjoining the Rose Garden is where the Kazi Rakib family resides. If you observe old films, this house and the Rose Garden often grab attention.
The architectural style of this building is unique. Its foundation is supported by six notched columns of varying heights, the tops of which are designed with vine motifs. The entire mansion is divided into five sections, with the three central sections featuring arches above the entrances that are sloped and semi-circular. The roofed sections on both sides are nearly circular and surround the central part. The main veranda of the building has a half-moon-shaped balcony, located above the three arches at the entrance. Vehicles enter the palace from the east, where the road meets the portico. Each part of the building has sloped iron brackets supporting square platforms, where dome-shaped lanterns hang from the top.
All entrances of the building are made of wood, colored Belgian glass, and iron, decorated with complex geometric patterns, vine motifs, and various animal motifs. Upstairs, after the white marble floors, there is a vast ballroom. The ceiling is adorned with floral designs made from green glass. A twisted staircase has been placed in front of the ballroom, leading to the roof. Parallel to the spiral staircase, the solid cement railing is decorated with various geometric designs.
With a high boundary wall of about 7,000 square feet, the mansion faces west and is nearly 45 feet tall. The front portion is the most attractive, while the sloping roofs of the surrounding extended portions blend with the triangular canopies on the east and west, typical of colonial architectural style. Most of the exterior walls of the mansion were originally painted in pink, but over time, the color has faded.
